Interview with Nami

Today I'm excited to bring you an interview with Nami. For those who don't know, Nami is the owner and designer of DeNami Design. We have asked her a wide range of questions (have to keep her on her toes!). We hope you enjoy getting to know Nami a little bit better!

What inspired you to start DeNami Design?

I was introduced to stamping over 20 years ago and loved it. Since I have always loved to draw and design, designing my own stamps was a natural transition. With the encouragement of my husband, Gary, DeNami Design was born.

How did you choose the name for the business?

When I began DeNami Design, I was handcrafting all kinds things. I made dolls, floral creations, dough art, fabric crafts, stamps and whatever else my creative mind could think up. The name means "by/from Nami". The name didn't limit me to any particular medium. I later concluded that I needed to narrow down my focus and stamping was the best option. The name remained the same.

Where do you get your inspiration for new designs?

I get inspiration from all around me. It may come from a picture in a magazine, fabric on clothing, home decor, store displays, gardens, etc. I get inspired seeing color combinations, textures, design combinations or just a theme. There is such richness everywhere. What a beautiful world we live in.

Did you take classes for calligraphy and/or art?

Yes, I have grown up immersed in art. Being of asian descent, I thought my lot in life would be something academic. Though I loved math, my passion was art and design. My parents always gave me an opportunity to spread my wings by allowing me to get training in any area of interest. One of earliest recollections was of my parents driving me to a private art class. I learned about pencil, charcoal and pastels. I also dabbled in painting, but found a love in pen and ink.
I have always appreciated good calligraphy. I recognize calligraphy as an art all to itself. In the early years, we hired professional calligraphers for the lettering designs and images. I further developed my calligraphy skills for the sheer joy of creating at that time. As time progressed, I realized that I had my own "flavor" in style and writing. I tied in my design with lettering to which DeNami Design is known for.

What do you enjoy most about your job?

I love creating. Creating stamp designs, projects, displays, promotions, web design, products, anything. I like to take something ordinary and make it extraordinary.

How long have you been stamping?

Over 22 years. Wow! Did I just say that?! Time flies.

How would you describe your stamping style?

It has been described as simple elegance, but with the addition of our cute character, whimsical can be added to that. I love clean lines and artistic styling.

What is your favorite color combination to use on your projects?

It changes with the seasons and occasion, but right now, the combination of emerald green, lime, hot pink, white, chocolate brown and cranberry makes me happy.

If you had to choose one go-to stamp, what would it be?

Definitely the circle stamps. If I had to choose one, the For You circle.

What is your favorite embellishment?

Glitter! And lots of it! :)

Any tips for new stampers?

The best tip I can offer to new stampers and old alike, is that if you see a card/project that you love, buy the supplies to make that project. That way you have a card/project that works. You can always go off from there. Too often people might buy a design/stamp they like, but when they get home, don't know what to do with it. It's especially helpful when you go to a stamp show and see all kinds of cards.
