Ombre Watercoloring Tutorial by Kanani

Step 1
For this technique I chose a bright pink color. What I love about creating an ombre effect is that all it takes is just ONE color.
Let's get started!
Wet your paintbrush and swirl it in the color of choice in your watercolor palette. You want your paintbrush to be fully saturated with both water and paint. This will dampen your paper and allow the first layer of color to be a light wash.
Starting from the top of your watercolor paper begin painting in even back and forth strokes, working your way to the bottom of the paper.

After your entire card panel is
covered with color, wet your paintbrush again and wipe off most of the water on
the side of your bowl.
Dip your paintbrush back into the same color in your palette, picking up a generous amount of color.
Again, starting from the top of your paper apply paint in even back and forth strokes until you reach the bottom. The trick here is to not go back to add more color to your paintbrush yet.

Once you’ve reached the bottom
of your card, add more water/paint until you get the ombre effect you are
looking for.
For my card, I wanted a really dark pink at the top while blending it out to a pink that’s just a few shades lighter at the bottom.

Step 4
Once you’ve reached the ombre
color you want, allow the card panel to dry thoroughly before moving on to the
next step.
To help speed up the drying process I used my heat gun. Because of the amount of water we used in the previous steps, I went one step further and got out my iron. Placing the card between two paper towels, I quickly ironed the panel so that it flattened out.

Step 5
Once the card panel is
completely dry, we can move on to stamping.
Using my Versafine Onyx Black ink pad, I stamped the Thinking of You Script sentiment in the lower right corner.

You will want to be a little
more careful when stamping onto watercolor paper since it is textured. Don’t
wiggle or jiggle your stamp too much or you’ll get ghosting or duplicate

Step 6
Next, I used the Three Butterflies and stamped them as if they were flying upwards using Versamark ink.
Step 7
After stamping the butterflies, I heat emboss them using white embossing powder.
There are so many different ways you can use watercolors. Try using two or more colors to create a multi-color ombre effect!
